This year, the Miranda Foundation has been the beneficiary of financial aid within the framework of Resolution ARP/4106/2024, of November 15, which calls for aid for the year 2024 for the maintenance of strategic low fuel load areas and complementary measures for the prevention of forest damage through grazing, within the framework of the Strategic Programme of the Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027 for grazing with equines al Garraf.
Specifically, they have been grazing the areas of the Mosque, Can Muntaner and Can Grau, with the aim of maintaining a low vegetation density and ensure that in the event of a forest fire, the fire does not reach great intensity or accelerate its spread to neighboring areas, thus helping the extinguishing agents to control the fire.
Els equines (horses, donkeys and ponies) have shown themselves to be great allies in the forest fire prevention thanks to playing a key role in ecosystems. Their role as large herbivores eating grass, shrubs and trees, and trampling vegetation, prevents the accumulation of fine forest fuel, causing the rapid spread of fires. In addition, the presence of excrement helps in the dispersion of seeds and the fertilization of the soil, which gradually improves its properties, and this reverts in improved vegetation and greater carbon fixation, with the consequent contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change.
Thanks to this financial support from Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat of Catalonia, it is hoped to maintain pasture in these areas of the Garraf Natural Park and continue to enhance the natural process of herbivory in this natural space.
